Unlocking Language provides independent speech and language therapy on site within educational settings.

We help you to develop a clear pathway for pupils with SLCN (speech, language and communication needs) from:

  • Access to national curriculum
  • Exam Preparation and study skills

You can buy in our service for regular input but you can also buy our services for one off assessments or individual children. We also work with pupil referral units and behavior units. Unlocking Language emphasizes the importance of a whole school approach to managing communication needs. We offer a variety of training packages that focus on giving you practical tools to support the child’s/student’s learning in the classroom. We also offer accredited training from iCan and Elklan. Early Years

We provide comprehensive assessments and reports, which evaluate sound awareness, speech, spoken language, phonics, vocabulary and auditory comprehension. We have a range of screening tools that we can train staff to use which help to decide whether the child has SLCN needs and the type of intervention they may require. At this stage we also show you how to streamline EAL verses SLCN.

Unlocking Language’s management to intervention is two-fold:

  • Classroom Support to access curriculum

We use evidence based programs both in groups and individually but at the same time work collaboratively with teachers to implement classroom strategies. We use a whole school approach to manage communication needs and inclusive within our price is staff training. We work closely with Educational Psychologists and Dyslexia Specialists to provide a holistic approach that underpins the child’s cognition, language, phonics and social skills.

Key stage 1 and 2

Secondary

We provide comprehensive assessments and reports, which evaluate written and spoken language, vocabulary, auditory and written comprehension, inference and descriptive writing. Students with SLCN often come to light at secondary school due to the demands of the curriculum. Our management to intervention is two-fold:
Evidence Based Intervention and Classroom Support to access curriculum

In addition we focus on developing the student’s ability to become more independent using self-help checklists and participating in exam and study skill groups. We work closely with Educational Psychologists and Dyslexia Specialists to provide a holistic approach that underpins their cognition, language, reading and spelling. We work closely with the English and Humanities department to develop strategies and writing frames to support descriptive writing and spoken language. Our work with the Science, Maths and IT department focuses on vocabulary access due to the increase of abstract and complex vocabulary. At Unlocking Language we have developed subject dictionaries that are visual and easy to read and access for a student with SLCN.

College and Higher level Educational Settings

We provide comprehensive assessments and reports, which evaluate written and spoken language, vocabulary, auditory and written comprehension, inference and descriptive writing. Students at this stage require quite specific support both with the course they have chosen but also support with the social-communication demands of more unstructured settings. Our management to intervention is two-fold:

We work closely with Educational Psychologists and Dyslexia Specialists to provide a holistic approach that underpins their cognition, language, and reading skills. We work closely you to develop strategies and writing frames to support descriptive writing and spoken language and a key focus on vocabulary access due to the increase of abstract and complex vocabulary at this level. At Unlocking Language we have developed subject dictionaries that are visual and easy to read and access for a student with SLCN.
